Benefits for Broadcasters: Reality TV

Sunday 16 May 2010

Jade Goody and Shilpa Shetty: What Ofcom said

The Celebrity Big Brother racism controversy was a series of events related to incidents of racist behaviour by contestants on the television series Celebrity Big Brother 2007 shown on British television station Channel 4. The racist incidents centred on comments made by contestants on this reality television show, most notably Big Brother contestant Jade Goody, glamour model Danielle Lloyd, and singer Jo O'Meara, which were directed towards Indian actress Shilpa Shetty.

A record 30,000 complaints where made to Ofcom and Carphone Warehouse ceased sponsorship of Celebrity Big Brother, below are a list of codes the show was in breach of

Breaches of the Ofcom Broadcasting Code:

Rule 2.3 – Broadcasters must when applying generally accepted standards ensure that material which may cause offence is justified by the context; and

Rule 1.3 – Children must also be protected by appropriate scheduling from unsuitable material.

Film Promotion: Controlled Assessment Pt2

For the second part of your controlled assessment (Thursday 25th February) you will have to design a DVD cover for the release of Avatar in DVD format. Therefore you will need to know the forms and conventions of a DVD cover, look at DVDs that you have at home especially the back also look at the Avatar website - are there features on there that could be incorporated into your DVD?

You will also have to write an interview script which will include 10 questions, the purpose of the interview is to promote the film of course! When you interview a movie star or a big time director for the purposes of promoting the film, you need to show that you've done your 'homework' and that you know as much about the film, the story and making of the film as the stars and director. There needs to be a clear link between the interview and DVD i.e. the interview is for the purpose of promoting the release of the DVD, so you need to have some idea of what you want the cover of your DVD to be like.

Some tips for planning your scripts are, that interviewers don't just ask 'yes' or 'no' questions, they show that they have done their research and have in depth knowledge of the film and how the film was made. They have seen the film and have a clear understanding of the narrative (storyline), themes and characters. Most of all they ask the right questions to get interesting and insightful answers. Below you find some clips from promotional interviews notice that some of the things the interviewer does is:

  • The interviewer says a little introduction before they start
  • Before they ask a question they show their knowledge of the film
  • Discuss themes of the film
  • Comment on how they personally felt watching the film (and links that to a question)
  • They're enthusiastic
  • Researched directors past work (and links that to a question)
  • Refer to past roles the actors have played
  • Discuss how the film came about or developed
  • Discuss actors/director working relationships

There are other things they may have talked about but I think I've helped you enough!

HOMEWORK: Avatar Trailer (Due Thursday 4th Feb)

DENOTATION = SAY WHAT YOU SEE (AND HEAR)
CONNOTATION = SAY WHAT IT MEANS

Today you successfully used your media skills to begin analysing the Avatar trailer. Some of you didn't get all the notes down so I have put all the denotation into a table for you, I have not put connotation notes.

You can download the table from slideshare (you'll have to sign up to do this) and fill in the connotations, you will need to convert the file from a PDF to a Word document so that you can type straight into the table, use this website to do that http://www.pdftoword.com/ if you can't download email me and I will send it to you.

Continue to denotate and connotate the Avatar trailer. Do this using sets of shots:

  • Shots 1-8
  • Shots 9-12
  • Shots 13-21
  • Shots 22-26
  • Shots 27-36
  • Shots 38-49
  • Shots 50-60
  • Shots 61-77
  • Shots 78-88
  • Shots 89-108
  • Shots 109-137
  • Shots 138-146

Film Posters and the Science Fiction Genre

Be Prepared!

I have already mentioned in an earlier post that for your Controlled Assessment you will have to analyse the Avatar poster and trailer. So prepare yourself by:

Wednesday 20 January 2010

Homework due: Monday 25th January

In class you compared The Transformers trailer to it's poster by answering questions and filling in a table. Use this same table format to compare the trailer you analysed for homework last week to the poster for the same film.

Saturday 16 January 2010

Homework: Due Thursday 21st January

You must use your knowledge gained from Thursdays lesson on the Science Fiction Genre and on trailers as tools of film promotion.

  1. Finish answering the questions on the Transformers trailer

  2. Analyse a science fiction trailer from the options below and using my example as a guide and the trailers question sheet to help. Your analysis must be a minimum of 700 words, and include relevant media language (e.g. diegetic and non-diegetic). You must try to use camera language and you have to explain how the science fiction genre is communicated to you (how does it put across genre conventions, ideology, representations, narrative themes? look on your A3 sheet) and how the trailer attracts the interest of the audience.
  3. Click here for help with media language http://10d1wellingmedia10.blogspot.com/search/label/audio%20visual%20language
