HOMEWORK: Avatar Trailer (Due Thursday 4th Feb)

DENOTATION = SAY WHAT YOU SEE (AND HEAR)
CONNOTATION = SAY WHAT IT MEANS

Today you successfully used your media skills to begin analysing the Avatar trailer. Some of you didn't get all the notes down so I have put all the denotation into a table for you, I have not put connotation notes.

You can download the table from slideshare (you'll have to sign up to do this) and fill in the connotations, you will need to convert the file from a PDF to a Word document so that you can type straight into the table, use this website to do that http://www.pdftoword.com/ if you can't download email me and I will send it to you.

Continue to denotate and connotate the Avatar trailer. Do this using sets of shots:

  • Shots 1-8
  • Shots 9-12
  • Shots 13-21
  • Shots 22-26
  • Shots 27-36
  • Shots 38-49
  • Shots 50-60
  • Shots 61-77
  • Shots 78-88
  • Shots 89-108
  • Shots 109-137
  • Shots 138-146

Film Posters and the Science Fiction Genre

Be Prepared!

I have already mentioned in an earlier post that for your Controlled Assessment you will have to analyse the Avatar poster and trailer. So prepare yourself by:

Wednesday 20 January 2010

Homework due: Monday 25th January

In class you compared The Transformers trailer to it's poster by answering questions and filling in a table. Use this same table format to compare the trailer you analysed for homework last week to the poster for the same film.

Homework: Due Thursday 21st January

You must use your knowledge gained from Thursdays lesson on the Science Fiction Genre and on trailers as tools of film promotion.

  1. Finish answering the questions on the Transformers trailer

  2. Analyse a science fiction trailer from the options below and using my example as a guide and the trailers question sheet to help. Your analysis must be a minimum of 700 words, and include relevant media language (e.g. diegetic and non-diegetic). You must try to use camera language and you have to explain how the science fiction genre is communicated to you (how does it put across genre conventions, ideology, representations, narrative themes? look on your A3 sheet) and how the trailer attracts the interest of the audience.
