Uses and Gratifications Theory

Uses and Gratifications Theory says that the audience uses media material to gratify certain needs this can be for; INFORMATION, PERSONAL IDENTITY, ENTERTAINMENT or INTEGRATION & SOCIAL INTERACTION. When looking at the front covers of your magazines can you guess how the readers would use the magazine to gratify (satisfy) the 4 categories?

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Magazines can satisfy esteem needs and needs for love and belonging. For example they can help you feel good about yourself, or help you feel like you belong to a social group and therefore you fit in.

Media Language: Magazines

Media Language is the way in which the meaning of a media text is conveyed to the audience. One of the ways that media language works to convey meaning through signs and symbols (semiotics). Signs and symbols in media texts are polysemic which means they are open to interpretation and son can have more than one meaning.

To understand the signs and symbols used within media texts you have to use denotation and connotation.

We have already explored the media languages used on the front covers of magazines, see diagrams below for a reminder.

Which covers are you going to analyse?

As you know by know for your first coursework assignment you have to analyse the cover pages of two popular magazines, and discuss how the cover pages appeal to the target audience. I have now decided that coursework will be completed in two formats, the first will be an essay and the second will be a Powerpoint presentation, some people may find the second option easier than writing an essay but I would like everyone to attempt to write an essay. If your minimum target grade is A-C and you do a good essay the Powerpoint will be optional.

I will be posting guidelines on how to complete the essay and Powerpoint presentation but first you need to choose which two magazine cover you would like to write about. YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE FROM THE MAGAZINES BELOW, the only exception being NME, you can find an alternative cover if you so choose.

Reader Profiles

It's important when you do your assignment that you discuss how the cover appeals to the magazines target audience. You can guess who the target audience is but you can also find out who the target audience is by searching the internet for the magazine media pack/kit. This is sent out to advertisers so that they can tell if their products would appeal to the magazine target audience. Find links below for media packs.
